“I said to myself: this work is useful”

“As soon as I heard about Handicap International's recruitment campaign on the radio, I jumped at the chance. I said to myself that this work was useful. So I took the recruitment tests and passed the exams. Then I took a 45-day training course before I was sent into the field. I get up at five in the morning and work in the fields and scrub until 1 o'clock. Then in the evening, after I get back to the camp and take a show, I take off my demining clothes, put on something more feminine and become a young woman again just like the others. The day I found my first mine I wasn't really sure of myself. I called the head of mission and he told me what to do. I was really proud at the end of the day. What I like is that we're demining land that's important for the local people.”
