Handicap International has been present in the Middle East since 1987. The organisation currently operates in five countries in the region: Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories. Its regional office is based in Amman.
Handicap International's operations are adapted to each country's specific situation. These operations are therefore just as likely to include mine clearance, capacity building of Disabled People Organizations, and mine risk education programmes as rehabilitation initiatives. The organisation also provides support to the disability movement at all level (regional, national, local).
In a region beset by chronic crises and political instability, Handicap International promotes the participation of people with disabilities in the social and political life of the region, and supports access for all to appropriate services, whatever the context.
