New: weatherproof shelters made from durable materials

Building of a temporary shelter

Handicap International will begin supplying hundred of families with temporary shelters designed to resist cyclones and earthquakes.

Handicap International has developed a temporary shelter specifically for use in Haiti. It is quick to build, earthquake-resistant, cyclone-resistant and has a lifespan of at least three years. It is also accessible to people with reduced mobility.
Made from wooden panels mounted on a wooden frame, it is covered with a sheet metal roof. It features a slightly raised floor to allow for the evacuation of rain water. It has a gently sloping access ramp and its walls can be strengthened with cement to resist violent winds.

It can be adjusted according to the size of each family and has a standard surface area of 18 sq.m. (6 by 3 metres). Available in kit form, it can be easily transported to the field. The local population were asked for their opinions on the design, following which Handicap International ensured that its future occupants would be able to maintain it easily and improved its panels.
An initial series of 200 shelters will be built over the coming weeks. The association will also renovate 200 homes that were damaged rather than completely destroyed.
